Why We Grow Native

Native plants do more than beautify the landscape—they bring life back to the land. At Big Bluestem Farm, we believe ecological restoration is both a calling and a responsibility. Every plant we nurture helps rebuild soil, feed pollinators, and reconnect people with the living systems that sustain us all.

Through our farm, preserve, and Ambassador Network, we’re helping individuals, organizations, and communities restore Michigan’s native ecosystems—one plant at a time.

Our Story

Rooted in Faith, Growing in Purpose

1977

The Beginning

Inspired by the words of Isaiah 55:12–13—“all the trees of the field will clap their hands”—the Hoganson family purchased 170 acres of natural land in Newaygo County. What began as a humble hunter’s cabin and a dream became a lifelong connection to the land’s rhythms.

Late 1970s–1980s

Nature Takes the Lead

A thriving beaver population transformed the property’s creek into a large pond, reshaping the ecosystem into a grass-dominated wetland. The family learned firsthand how nature balances itself when given space to thrive.
1990s–2010s

Stewardship in Practice

For decades, the land was managed with traditional forestry in mind—focused on oak and pine growth. But curiosity about what “belonged” here never faded.
2015

A Turning Point

Meeting Vern Stephens and Sue Tangora of Designs by Nature, LLC was transformative. Their visit revealed that the property was part of a rare Oak-Pine Barren ecosystem—one of Michigan’s most unique native habitats. That discovery reshaped the Hogansons’ understanding of their land’s true identity and potential.
Today

Restoration in Action

Big Bluestem Farm now operates as both a native seed farm and nursery, cultivating over 50 species of true Michigan natives. The property also serves as a wetlands and prairie preserve, a place of learning and renewal where stewardship meets faith in action.
