About Big Bluestem Farm

In 1977 inspired by the great Isaiah 55:12-13 passage “…all the trees of the field will clap their hands … This will be for the Lord’s renown” the Hoganson family purchased the 170 acres with a basic hunter’s cabin. The native property included about 40 acres of wetland and natural spring flowing into a beautiful creek ultimately feeding the big south branch of the Pere Marquette river.  Within three years the beaver population turned the beautiful creek into a big pond which created a grass dominated ecosystem along the creek bed. For over 40 years and two tree harvests, we believed the property should be covered by oaks and pines. Fortunately, in 2015 Shelly and I met Vern Stephens. Vern and his wife Sue Tangora, Designs by Nature, LLC, have been producing native plants. in Laingsburg, MI,since 1997. After a property tour and research Vern showed us we are in an Oak Pine Barren ecosystem.  Thus today, Big Bluestem is dedicated to restoring God’s beautiful creation by way of a native plant seed farm and nursery plus a native plant and wetlands preserve.
